Indiana University-East issued the following announcement on Sept. 14.
Indiana University East's Jake Miller charged to a "triple crown" to start the 2021 fall season.
Miller finished atop the individual leaderboard for the third time in three starts this fall with a first-place finish at the Indiana University Kokomo Fall Invitational, which concluded Sept. 14.
Miller needed a final-round 72 at the par-72, 6,944-yard Rock Hollow Golf Course to finish with a two-day total of 149, good for a one-stroke margin over James Murray from Aquinas College.
IU East almost authored a team comeback story of its own. The Red Wolves moved up to second place out of 12 in the final team standings, just two shots behind reigning River States Conference champion Midway University. The Red Wolves had started the day in third place, seven shots out of the team lead.
"Overall, another outstanding performance from Jake and his teammates," said IU East coach Jeff Williams. "We felt we gave it away late with a couple of costly holes, and you just can't do that against a team of Midway's caliber.
"Lots of lessons learned and several strong performances playing the toughest course in the most adverse conditions against the strongest field to date. We are most definitely a better team from the experience."
Rafael Beirana turned in a second-round 77 and placed sixth with a score of 155. Emiliano Tercero's second-day 79 gave the Red Wolves the boost up the team standings.
HOLE IN ONE FOR MAKI
Kyle Maki led the IU East "B" team with a two-day today of 160 - including a 76 in the final round - and a 17th-place finish.
Maki's round included a hole-in-one on the 219-yard par-3 No. 8. It was the sixth ace of Maki's golf career.
