Indiana University-East issued the following announcement on Oct. 29.
The Indiana University East women's basketball team opened the season with a 75-59 win over Lawrence Technological University in the RedStorm Classic in Newt Oliver Arena on the campus of the University of Rio Grande on Friday, Oct. 29.
"That was fun," IU East coach Tiffani Selhorst said. "Really proud of this team, we had a game plan and the players stuck to it."
With five players scoring in double figures for the Red Wolves, IU East (1-0) is now even in season openers at 4-4. The Blue Devils are 0-2 this season.
"That is probably one of the best defensive games in our program history and it is very exciting for our players to see good defense pays off," Selhorst said. "We get to celebrate our first opening win in four years, but we are focused on the next one. That's what's so awesome about this group."
Kami McEldowney led IU East with 16 points and four assists.
"This win meant a lot to us since our season got taken away from last year," McEldowney said. "I think this year we are grateful for every opportunity we have to play and giving it our all. I am so excited to see what we do this year."
Bethany Mackin tossed in 13 points, while Paige Gregory and Taylor Browning finished with 12 each.
Kennedy Griffin added 10 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
After falling behind 5-0, the Red Wolves put together a run to end the first period with a 14-7 advantage, as they never trailed the rest of the way.
"I thought we started out with high energy and stayed consistent the whole game," McEldowney said. "This year, we are a brand new team with new people, new defense, and a new culture."
IU East expanded its margin to 36-25 by the intermission. In the third quarter, the teams were even as the Red Wolves maintained a 55-44 edge, but IU East was able to pull away for the 16-point victory in the final stanza.
The Red Wolves return action in the two-day event against Milligan University on Saturday, Oct. 30. The contest gets underway at 1 p.m.
