Indiana University-East issued the following announcement on Dec. 11.
The Indiana University East women's basketball team dropped its first River States Conference game of the year to the NAIA No. 19 ranked University of Rio Grande 98-81 on Saturday, Dec. 11.
The Red Wolves hung tough with the undefeated RedStorm in the first half, but are now 9-3 overall and 2-1 in conference, while Rio Grande improves to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in conference.
The Red Wolves came out in the first half very competitive and capitalized 17 points off of Rio Grande turnovers which gave the hosts a first quarter lead 23-21. The RedStorm however, went on an 11-2 run midway through the second quarter to build a 36-27 lead at the time.
The second half was all RedStorm who pushed the tempo and tired out the Red Wolves.
Bethany Mackin and Addie Brown led the offensive attack for the Red Wolves with 18 and 16 points respectively, while Kaylee Darnell led Rio Grande with a game high 23 points.
"We knew Rio was tough and they were undefeated coming into today," Brown said. "We knew we had to rebound the ball and keep them on the left side, and it hurt our defense losing Paige Gregory in the first half. Alyssa Neal came in though and gave us a spark, but we need to know how to play better defense moving forward."
The Red Wolves with return to action against Ohio Christian University on Lingle Court on Tuesday Dec. 14 with tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
