Huntington University recently issued the following announcement.
The Huntington women's basketball team got back in the win column Tuesday night by handing the visiting Cougars of Spring Arbor a 61-48 loss in Platt Arena.
The Foresters camped out behind the three-point arc to shoot their way to victory. As a team, HU drained a season-best 13 threes. It was Culler's bench that led the charge from deep. Amanda Lovejoy, Celeste Ryman and Annie Seboe each sizzled the net three times from long range. The trio combined to go 9-for-14 for 64.3 percent from the cheap seats.
Freshman Kyra Baker set the tone by knocking down the first long ball on the opening possession of the game. While Spring Arbor kept things close the entire half, the Foresters' 3-0 lead proved permanent.
The halftime score was 28-25. While neither team did much offensively in the third, HU managed to separate themselves by five more points heading into the fourth where they grew the lead to as many as 19 midway through the quarter before settling for the 13-point win.
For the game, Huntington shot 46.4 percent from three-point land. Only eight of their 21 field goals were from inside the arc. The hosts finished with 12 turnovers while forcing SAU into 20 miscues that they cashed in for 16 points, but the evening's most noteworthy stat was the Forester bench outscoring the Spring Arbor bench 33-0.
Ryman led a balanced HU attack with 12 points to go along with three steals, three rebounds and two assists. Lovejoy and Seboe had career nights by tossing in 11 and nine points respectively. Baker handed out a game-best four dimes while Konnor Gambrell finished with a team-best seven rebounds.
The Cougars (4-17, 1-9) were paced by Alex Long who poured in 17 points. Abby Schwartz was SAU's only other double-digit scorer with 13. Grace Shoobridge and Taylor Folkema took charge of the glass by collecting 14 and ten rebounds respectively.
HU (3-18, 1-9) is back in Platt Arena on Saturday to host Saint Francis for their annual Pink Out game. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
