A two-time national qualifier in golf, Jo Wisecup is Indiana University East's Women's Athlete of the Year for 2021-22.
"I'm so honored to be able to end my career with this title," Wisecup said. "These past couple months is the best way I could've ended my career."
This is the second straight year Wisecup has earned this award. After qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament as an individual as a junior, Wisecup led the entire IU East to the event this spring.
"Being a part of the first team ever in school history to make it to a national stage and finishing my last college round even par and now getting named IU East Women's Athlete of the Year is great," Wisecup said.
Perhaps the biggest moment of the season was when Wisecup nailed a putt on the final hole of the RSC Championship to give the Red Wolves the first title in school history.
"This year was the first year I knew everybody was fighting for the same thing," Wisecup said. "Being able to given chance to go to nationals with the best team, words can't even describe how thankful I am for Brooklynn Cromwell, Annie Gillock, Liv Sanders and Katie Craig."
"This team has been through a lot this season," Wisecup added. "this team was willing to push through everything shows the true toughness this team has and is why we are so successful. I can't say how proud of this team, they handled the pressure at the national tournament very well. I could not have asked for anything more from my teammates, they went out there and gave it there all and that's exactly what I wanted. As Billy said "we are bonded for life" so thank you to everyone for all the life long memories."
"I want to put a special thanks to Brooklynn," Wisecup continued. "Your first year here we exchanged a couple words and I wish we never wasted that year. You became one of my best friends and teammate that I could ever ask for. We always pushed each other to do our best and for that I will always be thankful."
The daughter of Deanne and Richard Wisecup, Jo was the RSC Player of the Year as a junior.
"I have been very fortunate to coach some great players in both high school and college," IU East coach Billy Mullin said. "Jo is right up there in the top of that mix of select company. Her competitiveness and work ethic has been unsurpassed during her time here at IU East."
A four-time RSC Player of the Week this year, Wisecup graduated last month with as a business administration major with a minor in sports management.
"We are going to miss her dearly, but we have been so lucky to have a leader like Jo here at IU East," Mullin said. "She has taken this program to the next level and met the bar that was set by Bre Nowak three years ago. Jo is a IU East Red Wolf success story both academically and athletically. She will be successful in this next chapter of her life because she has the tenacity to stay after something and not quit until she gets what she wants."
Wisecup and Nowak are the only Red Wolves to qualify for nationals as an individual.
