Addie Brown's record-breaking performance led the way for the Indiana University East women's basketball team as the Red Wolves defeated Olivet Nazarene University 111-105 on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
Brown established a new IU East single game scoring record with 42 points on Lingle Court as she converted 14-of-26 shots with five 3-pointers, while make all nine free throw attempts.
With the victory, the Red Wolves are now 4-8. Olivet Nazarene is 5-5.
Known for a high-scoring offense and pressure defense, the Tigers controlled the tempo with a furious pace during most of the contest.
"We had one key to the game," Brown said. "If we could take care of the ball, then we were going to win the game."
The Red Wolves had 24 turnovers as the Tigers committed 17 miscues.
"We didn't meet our goal for turnovers, but I think our grit and our desire to win is what got us the W," Brown said. "We had to fight for everything."
The Tigers had their largest lead of the contest at 15-4 with 6:30 left in the opening period. However, by the end of the first quarter the Red Wolves closed the gap at 27-24.
At the intermission, IU East led 48-47. There were 11 lead changes and three ties as the teams battled fatigue and each other.
Near the end of the final stanza, IU East had built a 101-83 advantage with 3:40 remaining. The Tigers fought back to cut their deficit to 103-100 with 53 seconds to go.
Moments later, Kennedy Griffin drilled a 3-pointer with an assist from Brown that virtually put the game away with 47 seconds on the clock.
"It was huge," Brown said of Kennedy's trey. "She's clutch. She knows how to get it done."
"I'll feed her the ball all day," Brown continued. "She's a fantastic shooter and teammate. When I can get her the ball ... that's a win for the team."
Griffin finished with 22 points, while Davina Smith added 18 points with a team-high eight rebounds.
Tia King set the IU East scoring standard of 40 points against the University of Rio Grande on Feb. 6, 2018. Brown's 14 field goals also tied the individual game record held by King and Mackenzie Campbell.
IU East returns to action against No. 8 Marian University at home on Saturday, Dec. 17. The non-conference affair begins at 1 p.m.
