No. 19 Fighting Saints Use Big 3rd Quarter to Defeat Red Wolves | Indiana University-East Athletics

The Red Wolves women's basketball team looked to knock off their first Top 25 opponent of the season Thursday.

But the No. 19 University of St. Francis was able to stall IU East's offense in the third quarter, defeating the Red Wolves 61-52.

The Fighting Saints outscored the Red Wolves 14-2 in the third quarter.

Taylor Browning scored the first points in the game, a layup after just 33 seconds in. St. Francis led the rest of the quarter and it took 15 minutes before the Red Wolves would regain the lead thanks to an 11-2 run. Christina Himelick, Addie Brown, and Kennedy Griffin helped cut the 7-point deficit and turned it into a 2-point lead. Griffin's triple with 2:39 remaining in the half gave IUE their biggest lead of the game at 28-25.

The Red Wolves struggled in the third, going cold from the floor for the first seven and half minutes. Griffin's layup with 2:23 broke the scoreless streak. After three, the Fighting Saints led 46-30.

The IU East offense showed life in the fourth quarter. Brown scored 5-straight points to bring their deficit to 54-46. But it was too little, too late.

Griffin led the team with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Brown was also in double figures with 15. She connected on four 3-pointers.

The Red Wolves will have 11 days before their next contest against West Virginia Tech on Jan. 10. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Beckley, WV.
