Forbes has ranked Ball State University as the fourth-best midsized employer—and the only recognized education institution—in the State of Indiana.

The popular business magazine recently released its 2023 “America’s Best Midsize Employers” list, a ranking of 500 companies and institutions with 1,000 to 5,000 U.S.-based employees. The list, according to Forbes, utilizes data from a survey of about 45,000 American workers conducted by market research firm Statista, and indicates “that good jobs await people with a wide array of backgrounds, interests and skills.”

In this year’s listing, Ball State ranks 34th in the nation among all midsize education employers; it was the only qualifying education employer to earn a ranking among institutions within Indiana and the Mid-American Conference (MAC).

“I am grateful to Forbes for recognizing Ball State’s commitment to the fulfilling careers and meaningful lives of our dedicated employees,” Ball State President Geoffrey S. Mearns said. “Every week, someone stops me on campus or sends me an email to express their appreciation for the impact of our University on their lives or on their community. I can attribute this gratitude directly to the hard work of our faculty and staff.”

Founded in 1918 to help address Indiana’s need for more and better teachers, Ball State University has grown to seven academic colleges with highly respected programs in education, architecture, business, communications, fine arts, sciences and humanities, and the health professions.

For more than a century, Ball State has dedicated itself to the neighbors and communities it serves. Guided by Beneficence—the institutional icon that symbolizes the generosity of the five Ball brothers whose land donation to the State of Indiana allowed the University to flourish—Ball State has prioritized several community vitality indicators, including quality of life, economic vitality, sustainability, and an educated citizenry.
