Washington D.C. – On May 29, 2023, Congressman Greg Pence (R-IN) and Congresswoman Haley Stevens (D-MI) led 11 of their colleagues in sending a bipartisan letter to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about the impact of the agency’s enforcement actions on small businesses that manufacture and sell racing equipment. The letter asks the EPA to provide clearer guidance to businesses by outlining which automotive parts must be sold exclusively for the racetrack and which can be sold for street use.
“For over 100 years, America has had a rich cultural tradition of motorsports and automotive hobbies,” said Congressman Pence. “This industry has become not only a passion, but also a career, for over one million American men and women, particularly in Indiana, which is the racing capital of the world. In order for the motorsports industry to continue to thrive, it is critical that the EPA’s enforcement practices do not negatively impact those who manufacture, sell, and use products for legitimate auto racing competitions.”

Background:
Aftermarket performance parts and devices used in motorsports are critical to the ability of racecars to compete on the track, while at the same time support small businesses across the country. It is important that the EPA provides both racers and companies that manufacture and sell race parts, most of which are small businesses, clear and consistent guidance regarding products that can only be sold for race vehicles that are used exclusively on the track.
It is critical that the EPA works with automotive aftermarket businesses to support motorsports and the American tradition of personalizing motor vehicles, while at the same time accomplishing common goals of safe and effective use of these aftermarket parts.
