U.S. Congressman Greg Pence (R-IN) released a statement in response to the death of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr. Shukr, involved in a recent drone strike in the Golan Heights, was also wanted for his connection to the 1983 bombing of the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, which resulted in the deaths of 241 service members.
“This is a day I and so many families have long waited for,” Congressman Pence said. “The 1983 attack was the deadliest day for the United States Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima, and it’s a tragedy that lives with me every day. Fuad Shukr is responsible for stealing the lives of some of the best among us, with no regard for decency or humanity. For all Marines, Semper Fi is a lifetime commitment, and after 40 years, I am proud that justice has finally been served.”
Congressman Pence’s battalion was stationed in Beirut in 1983 and was shipped out just days before the bombings. He has introduced a resolution to recognize the anniversary of the attack every year of his Congressional career.
