U.S. Congressman Greg Pence has released a statement commemorating the 41st anniversary of the bombing of the U.S. Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. The attack, which occurred on October 23, 1983, resulted in the loss of 241 American lives.
"Today marks 41 years from the deadliest day for the U.S. Marine Corps since Iwo Jima," said Congressman Pence. "In one devastating blow, 241 lives were stolen from us. One act of evil resulted in 241 heroes never returning home."
Pence emphasized the significance of the Marine Corps motto: "Semper Fi is more than a slogan or creed – it’s a way of life." He added, "Today, we remember the 241 who laid down their lives to protect our freedom. I am committed to ensuring we never forget their sacrifice."
Congressman Pence served in the Marine Corps from 1979 to 1983 and was stationed in Beirut just days before the bombings took place. In honor of those who lost their lives, he introduced a resolution this week to recognize the anniversary of the attack—a tradition he has maintained throughout his time in Congress.
